CHAPTER 1 FAREWELL TO SLAVERY

Find out who you are, then set out to stake your claim in the world. The world is yours to do with as you think. Educate yourself! Examine your thoughts!

CHAPTER 2 ROAR WITH THE LIONS

Take the time to study the lives and philosophies of great thinkers. Put your own problems aside long enough to acquaint yourself with the lives of great leaders, inventors, educators, and achievers. Resolve to build upon the foundations that they laid by the sweat of their brow! Take your rightful place among the great lions! Remember as you begin to count your blessings, you will feel better. CHAPTER 3 PERCEPTIONS

Re-examine the way you view your world and open your mind to the endless array of positive people and circumstances that exist in the world. Opportunities are often hidden. They are only visible to clear thinking, mentally focused people. I have often heard Blacks say that we have to be twice as good as Whites in order to survive on the job. Well, that may be true, but the questions is; what is wrong with disciplining yourself to be twice as good? Super-successful people in every walk of life will tell you that they had to be better than the next guy. That was their outlook; a driving principle that elevated them to great heights! Susan Taylor, General Colon Powell, Toni Morrison, Oprah Winfrey, and Michael Jordon among others are arguably twice as good as their contemporaries. The world is full o achievers who decided to make themselves twice as good. Perceptions are simply the way you choose to color your world, however, you can only have the proper outlook by choice. The ball is always in your court!

CHAPTER 4 YOUR MIND...YOUR GUIDANCE SYSTEM

Our minds are the most powerful instruments in the universe. With our minds we can (and do) shape our futures. Find a worthy goal or ambition. If your thoughts are unworthy of your ambitions, get rid of those thoughts. If you are hanging around a non-supportive crowd, get a new crowd! A great part of having the ability to set your mind will be determined by your willingness to sacrifice long hard hours preparing yourself for eventual success. Great people are just ordinary people with extraordinary expectations! Keep things in perspective. Remember not to get caught up with certain negatives that might come your way. You must train your mind to search for the high road. Map out your destination . . . your life is worth the preparation.

CHAPTER 5 DESIRE

You must have a burning desire for change. Change your beliefs about yourself if they are negative, self-defeating beliefs. You have a choice in life. Everything in life hinges on your ability to control your thinking. You must courageously take a stand and start living your life exactly the way you want. After all, it is your life! Your desires are supported by your beliefs; and your beliefs reflect your innermost thoughts.

CHAPTER 6 RACISM

It is absolutely critical that we learn to deal with racism in a way that does not hinder or prevent us from achieving our goals. Most Blacks do not understand that a racist actually feels inferior! Bigots feel inadequate in many areas of their lives. That is the basis of their problem. Look at the poor skinheads; small, pathetic, insignificant savages who hide behind guns. If you were to look inside their hearts you would find that they are full of pain and anguish. They are nothing more than worthless misfits who are resentful and frightened of other races! It is critical for us to understand this breed and see them for what they truly are . . . frightened White people! Do not let these wretched little people rain on your parade.

CHAPTER 7 FAITH

Most people do not understand the absolute power of faith. Faith is actually a gift! Fortune is the one who climbs to this lofty realm of consciousness. Faith is a power that goes right to the very core of your being. In other words, you will feel faith. The deeper the feelings, the closer you are to the thing or situation that you desire. My faith is unseen by all except my heart’s eye. In there, within the dark rhythmic pulsing, I find my strength, which is fortified by my vision.

CHAPTER 8 SUCCESS

When you can wake up in the morning and sing with the birds; when you can bask in the warmth of the sun; when you can sit and marvel at the power of an afternoon thundershower and be at one with that power; when you can look deep into the eyes of a loved one and can transmit that love back to them; when you can look at that Black face in the mirror and thank God, you my friend have arrived. Success and you are one. Understand that no amount of money or material possession will bring you more success than love. Awareness of the need to give and receive love will render you more success than you can handle!

CHAPTER 9 MYTHS...BREAKING BARRIERS

I live unaffected by myths, for I choose not to tread upon murky waters where swims the common mind. The power to change has always been within our grasp; but we must make the effort. Personally, with conviction, you can renew your mind and myths will fall from your consciousness . . . thus leaving room to fill your mind with keys to internal personal power.

CHAPTER 10 DIRECTIONS

I chart my course for I know that there are many who stand ready and willing to direct those who choose not to direct themselves. You are the one who has been so destined to hold the keys to your mind shackles; your mind, your shackles, your power and ultimately…your choice. FREE YOUR MIND! Almas Jamil Sami’ says each of us [African-Americans] must come to the basic understanding of how the human mind works, and that thought is the launching pad of our every action! Through the eradication of our slave-laced thinking habits, we will discover that we are much greater than we believe. We must move beyond blame, rise above petty bickering and at last cease the practice of refusing to make introspection a priority. Self Published Book Promotes What You Need to Succeed, Starting in the Mind

In the genre of psychological self-help and success literature, Bob Reese has contributed a most valuable addition with his Develop the Winner´s Mentality. He has taken the essentials of cognitive-behavioral, motivational, and sport psychology and integrated them with an energy component that not only explains why they work, but accelerates their outcomes. The technique of Feelazation, which is the addition of powerful emotional energy to visualization, is also introduced. Reese says, "There´s nothing really new about goal setting, visualization, stress management, and how to think effectively. They are all important and effective for promoting success. What I bring to the party is adding the emotional and energetic components to the other skills so that with proper integration you can cause enduring success."

The 5 Essential Mental Skills are goal setting, visualization, energy management, effective thinking, and mental toughness. As stand-alones, each of the five mental skills can have a positive impact on performance, behavior, and success. According to Reese, when these skills are integrated, there is a synergistic effect created in which the result (enduring success) is much greater than the sum of the parts. He also posits that the integration of the first four essential mental skills can encourage mental toughness, a trait that many feel you have to be born with. In his Ph.D. dissertation Reese showed that a Div. I Volleyball team enhanced both individual performance and mental toughness when the program was implemented.

For 25 years Reese served as an athletic trainer in the NFL. Develop the Winner´s Mentality is replete with both humorous and poignant stories of how some of the athletes he worked with utilized these skills to ensure their success. The most moving example is that of Dennis Byrd, a New York Jets player who was quadriplegic from a broken neck and who had a grim prognosis - he would be confined to a wheelchair for life. Byrd´s use of emotive goal setting to walk out of the hospital only three months after his injury leads Reese to refer to him as the Ultimate Goal Setter.

Forewards for Develop the Winner’s Mentality are provided by two time NCAA National Champion University of Southern California Head Football Coach Pete Carroll, and former NFL All-Pro wide receiver and TV Celebrity Ahmad Rashad. Both high performers, Carroll and Rashad discuss their use of the mental skills and their personal relationship with Reese.

The book is sectioned into 15 chapters that are written in a manor that facilitates the novice in the learning and application of each of the 5 Essential Mental Skills. Winner´s is also interesting enough to keep the successful veterans of mental skills training engaged so that they can enhance the skills they already possess.
