Self Published Self Help Book for the Grief Stricken

  • Mood:
  • Music: Too Lost in You / Sugababes

A Trek In the Desert: Finding a Path Through Grief is a self-published book about the universal experience of grief, and the road to grief recovery.   In her burning need to find relief and regain a feeling of sanity following the death of her son by suicide, the death of her husband from cancer and the death of an ex-husband, Roberta Zybach Yarbrough began her personal journey to understand something about grief and grief recovery.  In the process, she discovered that there remained unresolved issues surrounding the loss of her parents.  In this book, she draws on her own observations, experience and the knowledge primarily gleaned through reading, counseling (both private and group) attending grief recovery seminars, and through her own writing.

The reader is taken on a journey through the life of a divorced single mother, her struggles to become self-supporting, self-sufficient and self-confident enough to trust another relationship.  Her second marriage, to Lee, also ends in divorce.  As she continues to advance in her career, her self-confidence increases and she is willing to commit to another relationship.  In 1976, she is again married.  Her husband, Bob, is subsequently diagnosed with cancer.

While her life to this point has not been easy, she is totally unprepared for the news of the death by suicide of her son, Todd, who was battling cocaine addiction.  She feels her emotions must be stifled to a large extent because of the responsibility she carries of tending her terminally ill husband.  For the two years between the death of her son and the death of her husband, she begins her grief work.  She seeks relief from the guilt and anger as well as shame and rejection associated with suicide.  At the same time, she is dealing with anger at her husband for being seriously ill and unable to offer her comfort or help with her grief work.  She learns that irrational feelings are a part of grief.

While she is working to recover from the loss of her son, she feels that she dare not give in to her grief as she faces the imminent death of her husband.  As Bob enters hospice care, Roberta becomes his caregiver.  In the last four months of his life, he requires constant care, giving the couple a special time together to iron out differences, forgive and be forgiven.  She says, “Caring for Bob in his last days was the most loving things I have ever had the opportunity to do.”

A few months after Bob’s death, Lee also dies following a lingering illness.  While their marriage was short, they had remained friends, and his death was another serious loss.  Since she is an ex-wife who had remarried, she is a disenfranchised griever.

Different emotions are associated with each of these losses.  Death by suicide leaves survivors in shock, feeling rejection, anger, guilt and shame.   In the case of death from cancer, there is a feeling of relief that suffering has ended, yet there is a deep sadness and a feeling of exhaustion.

Disenfranchised grief is a sense of loss not normally recognized as legitimate grief by society.  For instance, an ex-spouse, a distant relative, a pet, a homosexual partner, etc.  The grief is real but unrecognized.  These feelings, while often severe, are normally untended since they are ignored by society.  Therefore, those who grieve often believe they, too, should ignore their feelings.  Stuffing emotions under a mental rug does not make them go away.

In her grief work, Yarbrough discovers that there are unresolved issues surrounding her parents deaths in the mid 1970.  She has been unable to return to the home in Texas where she was raised and where her parents had lived until her mother’s death in 1972.  Everything is different.  Her parents are gone, the house is gone.  What had always been a safe harbor in the storms of her life is no more.  Realizing that her feelings about the old home place are associated with unresolved grief, she returns and heals the sore spot around her heart which was associated with the loss of her parents and the home place.

The book present methods Yarbrough learned through her experience in grief recovery which she would like to share with those who are lost in their desert of despair and think they will never find a way out.  She offers hope and points out specific ways that one can use to find their own path through grief.

A Preacher's Recovery From Alcoholism

  • Mood:
  • Music: About a Girl / Sugababes

Several years ago, my congregation was informed, one Sunday morning, that I would not be there to preach for a few weeks because I was in an alcoholic treatment center. The last thing I wanted to do, when I came out of that hospital, was to stand in a pulpit and say anything to anybody!

But there was no other plan running, and I certainly hadn’t had a chance to devise one. So Sunday came, and there I was. There seemed to be nothing for it but to continue doing what I had been doing, at least until we all had a chance to regroup. I assumed that meant the church would find a new minister, and I would find a new vocation.

Sunday morning came, and it was as strange and painful as I had imagined it would be. But the days after came swiftly, and other things began to happen. I was going to twelve-step meetings and church meetings and Bible Study groups. Rather quickly, people came to counsel with me again, only now some of them talked even more freely than before. Soon all of these things kept getting mixed up together until it was hard to tell where church left off and the twelve-step program began; where helping others left off and getting help myself began; where sharing in a meeting left off and preaching began.

As the weeks passed and nobody asked for my resignation, I found less and less opportunity to plan or look for my next career. It also seemed to me that the precepts of the Christian Faith were getting clearer and more personal and more practical than ever.

A Year to Remember is a self-published book by Reverend Bruce Van Blair.

A Self Published How-to Book on University Success

  • Mood:
  • Music: Call Me / Go West

Jeffrey J. Langan's From Animal House to the Academy is a self-published book that follows a series of seminars to college freshmen, designed to help them understand themselves, their environment, and how to effectively flourish in the modern university.

Chapter One offers a description of how leadership works in society, how leaders influence the structure of institutions, and the various character dispositions that women and men bring to institutions.

Chapter Two explains the importance of understanding the human soul in order to understand the influence that the soul has on the environment, as well as what threats exist in our culture that could lead us to perhaps too easily forget about the importance of shaping one’s soul from a young age.

Chapter Three gives practical advice to young men about what they can specifically do during their university years to transform college from a vacation from life into a preparation for a vocation.

Chapters Four and Five put the struggle of today’s young men within the context of an age-old struggle that involves the likes of Socrates and the early Christians.

Chapters Six and Seven offer very practical guidelines for dealing with food, drink, and the social life of a college student. Chapters eight and nine examine friendship and relationships.

Chapter Ten discusses the history of how virtue-building customs were removed from the university.

Chapter Eleven finishes with a practical outline of how individual and small groups of young men could challenge each other to re-insert the understanding and practice of virtue into their own lives as well as the life of their university and society as a whole.

A Self Published Lift Me Up Book

  • Mood:

Its about your attitude! Tens of millions of people are trapped in a downward spiral of depression, anger, bitterness, and reactivity. Personal negativity has grown to such proportions it can now be considered an attitudinal addiction. Since cognition and attitude have become widely recognized as critical factors underlying health, this pervasive bad attitude clearly undermines our personal and collective health. Lives are cut short, careers are stunted, and relationships wither, because of negativity.

But there is an Up Side to the attitude trap. By using the right tools, anyone can find a way out, and experience more vitality and happiness than ever seemed possible.

The Up Side of Being Down is a simple self-help guide for healing your personal forms of negativity. The self-published book offers a look at a painful condition that has become as pervasive as Prozac, and as insidious as toxic waste. Each one of us has own degree of personal negativity. The recommendations in this book will help you identify, accept, and heal dysfunctional attitudinal conditions, using a self-guided approach called Mind Fitness.

Mind Fitness, like physical fitness, is a lifestyle that leads to better health and greater fulfillment. Instead of barbells and running shoes, Mind Fitness applies the tools of relaxation, proactive reflection and whole-brain learning to create a mental and emotional fitness that promotes full potential and well-being.

The Mind Fitness approach embraces the principles of attitudinal psychology, offering solutions for the problems of human health and well-being. The challenge of facing our own negativity?both personally and collectively?plays a large part in the beginning of this new millennium. Mind Fitness is a timely and far-reaching approach to help us do just that.

Then, this book is for you.

In Up Side of Being Down we explore a very common problem?negative attitudes?how they affect our lives, and what we can do about them. Through identification and acceptance of our own forms of personal negativity, our focus shifts from external events to internal causes...

A Self Published Afrocentric Approach to Freeing Your Mind

  • Mood:
  • Music: Tye Tribbett

The Unshackled Mind: An Afrocentric Approach To Self Help, is based on the notion that African Americans must POSITIVELY reconnect to history. We must work to place our ancestors at the table of human achievement and accomplishment. However this must be done in a positive way that inspires, motivates and captivates rather than incite crippling anger and hostility. The Unshackled Mind is a blue print for such an approach.

Here's a preview of Almas Jamil Sami's self-published book...

CHAPTER 1 FAREWELL TO SLAVERY

We must come to the realization that there is nothing inherently wrong with us. We must finally learn that there is nothing wrong with our lips. We must learn that that there is nothing wrong with our kinky hair. We must learn that there is nothing wrong with our skin tones, in all of our skin tones, in all of our majestic shades! Study pre-slavery history. You will discover that your kinfolk’s planted the seeds of civilization. You have a rich, proud heritage. Bow down to no one. Find out who you are, then set out to stake your claim in the world. The world is yours to do with as you think. Educate yourself! Examine your thoughts!

CHAPTER 2 ROAR WITH THE LIONS

Take the time to study the lives and philosophies of great thinkers. Put your own problems aside long enough to acquaint yourself with the lives of great leaders, inventors, educators, and achievers. Resolve to build upon the foundations that they laid by the sweat of their brow! Take your rightful place among the great lions! Remember as you begin to count your blessings, you will feel better. When you feel better, you will think better thoughts. When you think better thoughts, you will automatically attract more desirable conditions. When your time comes, you will let out a mighty roar!

CHAPTER 3 PERCEPTIONS

Re-examine the way you view your world and open your mind to the endless array of positive people and circumstances that exist in the world. Opportunities are often hidden. They are only visible to clear thinking, mentally focused people. I have often heard Blacks say that we have to be twice as good as Whites in order to survive on the job. Well, that may be true, but the questions is; what is wrong with disciplining yourself to be twice as good? Super-successful people in every walk of life will tell you that they had to be better than the next guy. That was their outlook; a driving principle that elevated them to great heights! Susan Taylor, General Colon Powell, Toni Morrison, Oprah Winfrey, and Michael Jordon among others are arguably twice as good as their contemporaries. The world is full o achievers who decided to make themselves twice as good. Perceptions are simply the way you choose to color your world, however, you can only have the proper outlook by choice. The ball is always in your court!

CHAPTER 4 YOUR MIND...YOUR GUIDANCE SYSTEM

Our minds are the most powerful instruments in the universe. With our minds we can (and do) shape our futures. Find a worthy goal or ambition. If your thoughts are unworthy of your ambitions, get rid of those thoughts. If you are hanging around a non-supportive crowd, get a new crowd! A great part of having the ability to set your mind will be determined by your willingness to sacrifice long hard hours preparing yourself for eventual success. Great people are just ordinary people with extraordinary expectations! Keep things in perspective. Remember not to get caught up with certain negatives that might come your way. You must train your mind to search for the high road. Map out your destination . . . your life is worth the preparation.

CHAPTER 5 DESIRE

You must have a burning desire for change. Change your beliefs about yourself if they are negative, self-defeating beliefs. You have a choice in life. Everything in life hinges on your ability to control your thinking. You must courageously take a stand and start living your life exactly the way you want. After all, it is your life! Your desires are supported by your beliefs; and your beliefs reflect your innermost thoughts.

CHAPTER 6 RACISM

It is absolutely critical that we learn to deal with racism in a way that does not hinder or prevent us from achieving our goals. Most Blacks do not understand that a racist actually feels inferior! Bigots feel inadequate in many areas of their lives. That is the basis of their problem. Look at the poor skinheads; small, pathetic, insignificant savages who hide behind guns. If you were to look inside their hearts you would find that they are full of pain and anguish. They are nothing more than worthless misfits who are resentful and frightened of other races! It is critical for us to understand this breed and see them for what they truly are . . . frightened White people! Do not let these wretched little people rain on your parade.

CHAPTER 7 FAITH

Most people do not understand the absolute power of faith. Faith is actually a gift! Fortune is the one who climbs to this lofty realm of consciousness. Faith is a power that goes right to the very core of your being. In other words, you will feel faith. The deeper the feelings, the closer you are to the thing or situation that you desire. My faith is unseen by all except my heart’s eye. In there, within the dark rhythmic pulsing, I find my strength, which is fortified by my vision.

CHAPTER 8 SUCCESS

When you can wake up in the morning and sing with the birds; when you can bask in the warmth of the sun; when you can sit and marvel at the power of an afternoon thundershower and be at one with that power; when you can look deep into the eyes of a loved one and can transmit that love back to them; when you can look at that Black face in the mirror and thank God, you my friend have arrived. Success and you are one. Understand that no amount of money or material possession will bring you more success than love. Awareness of the need to give and receive love will render you more success than you can handle!

CHAPTER 9 MYTHS...BREAKING BARRIERS

I live unaffected by myths, for I choose not to tread upon murky waters where swims the common mind. The power to change has always been within our grasp; but we must make the effort. Personally, with conviction, you can renew your mind and myths will fall from your consciousness . . . thus leaving room to fill your mind with keys to internal personal power.

CHAPTER 10 DIRECTIONS

I chart my course for I know that there are many who stand ready and willing to direct those who choose not to direct themselves. You are the one who has been so destined to hold the keys to your mind shackles; your mind, your shackles, your power and ultimately…your choice. FREE YOUR MIND! Almas Jamil Sami’ says each of us [African-Americans] must come to the basic understanding of how the human mind works, and that thought is the launching pad of our every action! Through the eradication of our slave-laced thinking habits, we will discover that we are much greater than we believe. We must move beyond blame, rise above petty bickering and at last cease the practice of refusing to make introspection a priority. If we would but look inside ourselves, we would learn of the magnificence of our ancestors,,, and would then be properly directed for all time. For this reason, we must pause and reflect upon what was, and resolve to become a causing agent for change today, individually and collectively.
